Managing Acne and Oily Skin: A Dermatologist's Guide

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions we treat at Muscat Dermatology, affecting not just teenagers but adults well into their 30s and 40s. In Oman's warm, humid climate, excess oil production combined with sweat and bacteria can make acne particularly challenging to manage. The good news is that effective treatments are available.

Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. This creates an environment where bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) thrive, leading to inflammation, redness, and pus-filled lesions. Several factors contribute to acne, including hormonal fluctuations, genetics, stress, diet, and certain skincare or hair products.

The foundation of acne management is a consistent, appropriate skincare routine. Use a gentle cleanser twice daily — harsh scrubbing or over-washing can actually worsen acne by irritating the skin and stimulating more oil production. Look for non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) moisturizers and makeup, and always remove makeup before bed.

Over-the-counter ingredients like salicylic acid (which exfoliates inside pores) and benzoyl peroxide (which kills acne bacteria) can be effective for mild acne. However, if you have persistent or severe acne, prescription treatments may be necessary. These include topical retinoids, oral antibiotics, hormonal therapy, or in severe cases, isotretinoin.

At Muscat Dermatology, we take a comprehensive approach to acne treatment. After assessing your skin, we may recommend a combination of medical-grade skincare products, in-clinic treatments like chemical peels or HydraFacials, and if needed, prescription medications. We also address contributing factors like diet, stress, and skincare habits.

It's important to be patient — acne treatments typically take 6 to 8 weeks to show significant improvement, and consistency is key. Never pick or squeeze acne lesions, as this can cause scarring and hyperpigmentation. If you're struggling with acne, book a consultation at our Muscat or Salalah branch. Our specialists will create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve clearer, healthier skin.
